Speech Production Experiment: Prompts______________________________ Subjects were given the following task description. In the printed task description, the ARPABET transcriptions shown below were replaced by appropriate IPA symbols. -------------------------------------------------------------------- You will be asked to sustain the position of each of the following vowels for 20-25 seconds at a time while the MRI scans you. You will be asked to repeat each vowel approximately 10-15 times. It is of utmost importance that you keep your mouth and head PERFECTLY STILL while you are being imaged, that you DO NOT MOVE YOUR HEAD between two repetitions of the same vowel, and that when you are asked to repeat a vowel, you repeat it using EXACTLY THE SAME MOUTH SHAPE each time. Since most people can not sustain a vowel for 25 seconds, you will be asked to pretend to say the vowel for 25 seconds, but without producing any sound. Please hold your breath during imaging, in order to avoid the extra movement associated with breathing. During the acoustic recording session, you will have a chance to practice sustaining each vowel both with and without sound. If you get tired and need a break, please let the MRI technologist know. If your need is not urgent, we will take you out of the scanner at the next break between two vowels (usually in 5-10 minutes). If your need is urgent, please tell us, and we will take you out of the scanner immediately. The words in the right column are given to show you what the vowel sounds like, but please do not say the entire word --- JUST THE VOWEL.
